Winona Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Lake Park Bandshell

Winona’s iconic Lake Park Bandshell hosted a special event on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, commemorating its 100th anniversary. The evening was a blend of community spirit and musical celebration.

At 7:30 pm, attendees witnessed a special moment as Laurie Lucas, family and board member of the Laird Norton Foundation, accompanied by Mayor Scott Sherman and City Manager Chad Ubl, participated in a symbolic gesture of tossing woodchips onto a newly planted Princeton Elm tree. This tree stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Laird Norton Company, a cornerstone of Winona’s history.

Following the ceremony were remarks and a proclamation by Mayor Sherman who shared insights into Winona’s rich heritage, emphasizing the profound impact of the Laird Norton Company on the community. The evening’s program underscored the spirit of giving and unity that defines Winona, echoing the values upheld by the Laird and Norton families across generations.

Immediately following was a concert by the Winona Municipal Band led by Band Director, Levi Lundak, which played a 100th anniversary tribute-based set list. Those songs were: The Star Spangled Banner, arr. Bowles; Aces Of The Air, Karl King; Loch Lomond, Frank Ticheli; Light Cavalry Overture, von Suppe arr. Kreines; Johnson Rag-Hall, Kleinkauf arr. Cooke; A Beguine Fantasy, Zane Van Auken; I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Whitfield & Strong arr. Smith; George Washington Bicentennial, John Philip Sousa; Evita for Band, Lloyd Webber arr. Cacavas; America The Beautiful, Ward arr. Dragon.

This 100th Anniversary milestone celebration was made possible by The Winona Foundation, a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to preserving local history and supporting community initiatives. For more information about The Winona Foundation, please visit www.winonafoundation.org
